Skyscrapers of the Midwest
OUT OF PRINT. WILL BE BACK IN PRINT AUGUST 2010!
Observing the isolated existence of an adolescent cat, his younger brother and their overactive imaginations in the American Heartland, Skyscrapers of the Midwest serves as an intimate chronicle of their stories of childhood hope, panic and loss. Filled with belligerent cowboys, lumbering automaton deities and wide-open spaces, this comic gives voice to a highly respected new creator in the field of sequential literature. (Me, apparently.)

I can't help it! Don't we all? Don't we? Anyway, I'm trying to keep this page professional. I'm nearing my mid-thirties and I need to start behaving like an adult. Skyscrapers, Page 196
Page 196 from the 'Skyscrapers' collection. As a child, it felt like we spent at least 80% of every single day either on dad's bus route or in the front of his truck while he went out to run errands. Usually to the hardware store. He built our house when I was nine or so, and while it was pretty impressive that my father (a/my math teacher and avid bus driver) wanted to build his own house, it led to what became a special circle of hell reserved for my brother and I, spending hours upon endless hours in 'Payless Cashways' and 'Woodruff Arnold', where everything smelled like pine fresh-cut pine and you got to watch middle-aged couples in matching denim jackets argue over which of the 843 tile options would be most appropriate for the godforsaken utility room. But he ended up building a really nice house, held up really well over the years... and it's still my favorite place to go to get away from the outside world. Damn you, outside world.

Page 206 from the 'Skyscrapers' collection. OK, I admit it. I faked fevers and stomach aches to keep from going to school every now and then... every year from 3rd grade on, I would guess. No more than one day a semester, or so... I was simply a child that happened to be fully aware of his limitations in an educational environment and, ultimately, it didn't really matter because I couldn't focus on what was being taught at me anyways due to my crippling social anxiety issues constantly tearing away at my insides. Easier to watch Andy Griffith and The Beverly Hillbillies all day... Go ahead, report me truant. And ya'll come back now.
Oh, but I WAS sick this time. Fever dreams, man.
